Sarah Blau

Sarah Blau studierte Geschichte und Psychologie an der Bar-Ilan-Universität. Nach dem Besuch der Schule leistete sie Zivildienst am Institut für Holocaust Studien der Universität Haifa und arbeitete dort nach dem Studium für viele Jahre als Dozentin. Blau hat verschiedene Beiträge für Fernsehen und Zeitungen über die Rolle des Feminismus in der orthodoxen jüdischen Gesellschaft geschrieben. Blau hat bislang zwei Romane veröffentlicht, die der Übersetzung ins Englische und Deutsche harren. In ihrem ersten Roman verkehrt sie die traditionell nebengeordnete Rolle der Frau im Golem-Mythos und weist ihr die Hauptrolle zu. Im Jahr 1999 begann sie mit ihren Freunden den offiziellen Holocaust-Gedenktag Jom haScho’a auf eine eigene Weise zu gestalten, was Widerspruch und Interesse in der israelischen Gesellschaft auslöste: jedes Jahr sprechen auf einer alternativen Veranstaltung zehn junge Menschen jeweils über einen Gedanken zum Holocaust und die Zeit seither. 2012 traten neben ihr der Schauspieler Amir Orion, die Sängerin Sheila Farber und die Tänzerin Smadar Yaaron im Tmoona Theater auf.

Lehrveranstaltung im SoSe 2026

Women and Gender in Jewish History and Literature -Übung (Blockseminar) am 05., 06., 07., 12., 13., 19. und 20. Mai 2026 

This course examines prominent representations of women and gender in Judaism through historical, literary, and theological lenses. We will explore a diverse gallery of figures and archetypes, including the biblical Eve, the "woman warrior," the Jewish witch, and the female Torah scholar. Each session focuses on a single myth or narrative, tracing its evolution across different eras. For example, we will analyze the Expulsion from Eden as it appears in the Hebrew Bible, Midrashic literature, and the philosophy of Walter Benjamin. Similarly, our study of the female scholar will span from the Babylonian Talmud and Early Modern Yiddish culture to the contemporary American film Yentl.

The course is co-taught in English by Sarah Blau and Ghilad Shenhav. Blau is a renowned Hebrew author serving this year as the Amos Oz Guest Professor for Hebrew Literature at LMU.

The author Sarah Blau has received international attention for her body of work, which offers diverse perspectives on the "unfamiliar faces" of Jewish women and Orthodoxy in Israel and beyond. Her fiction explores themes such as the lives of Orthodox women who choose childlessness, the myths surrounding feminine martyrdom, and the profound links between the act of creation and the craft of writing. In conversation with Dr. Ghilad H. Shenhav, Blau will discuss the evolution of her work and the ways in which she reimagines traditional Jewish narratives as modern feminist drama.
