Perceptions of Indigeneity in Palestine/Israel and Beyond-Übung (Blockseminar) am 02., 03., 08., 10., 11., 17., 18., 22. und 24. Juni 2026
The course explores the concept of indigeneity in Palestine/Israel, by tracing different, and at times conflicting, perceptions of the concept among Palestinian natives, Jewish Ashkenazi settlers, and Jewish Mizrahi ambivalent position between these two social groups. Treating the concept of indigeneity as dynamic and relational, the course offers a historical perspective, that spans across the past 100 years, and takes into account the changing political orders as well as territorial and demographic definitions, from the Ottoman period to the British Mandate, to the establishment of the State of Israel, to the territorial expansion of the Israeli settlement project in 1967, and till the recent years. With this trajectory in mind, we will examine how perceptions of indigeneity not only changed, at times radically, among the aforementioned groups, but were the bedrock for political claims and disqualifications.
