Jews and Gender in Medieval and Early Modern Europe

Übung 09101 – WiSe 2018-19
Jews and Gender in Medieval and Early Modern Europe

Instructor: Dr. Rachel Furst

This course will examine the roles and the representation of Jewish women and men in medieval and early modern Europe. Pre-modern Jews were the inheritors of a rabbinic tradition that prescribed gender roles in specific, and occasionally restrictive, ways; but as members of medieval and early modern European societies, their lives were also impacted by contemporaneous gender ideology, social mores, and cultural norms. Economic need, demographic reality, and religious competition all contributed to shifting expectations of the functions that Jewish women and men would assume in private and public spheres. Through close readings of legal texts, literary works, and documentary records, we will consider the relationship between gender theory and practice and the ways in which medieval and early modern Jews negotiated their gendered identities.
