The Qur’an on Jews and Judaism

One hears that the Qur’an has very definite views of Jews: “The Qur’an says that Jews are apes!” “The Qur’an admits that Jews are entitled to the ‘Holy Land’!” “The Qur’an commands the believers to ‘Kill the Jews!’” The fact is that none of these are accurate, despite the fact that the Qur’an devotes hundreds of verses to the topic of Jews and Judaism. This presentation, complete with a representative range of text citations in the original Arabic and English translation, will unpack the complex and controversial topic of Jews and Judaism in the Qur’an.
Prof. Dr. Reuven Firestone hat die Regenstein Professur in mittelalterlichem Judentum und Islam am Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles inne und ist Professor an der School of Religion der University of Southern California. Als Autor von acht Büchern und über einhundert wissenschaftlichen Artikeln und Buchkapiteln über das Judentum und den Islam, die Phänomenologie der Religion und den sogenannten „Heiligen Krieg“ war Prof. Dr. Firestone Präsident der International Qur‘anic Studies Association. Als Humboldt-Forschungspreisträger analysiert er in seinem gegenwärtigen Projekt die Sichtweisen des Korans und Muhammads auf das vormoderne Judentum.
