Jews and the Origins of Mass Culture in Argentina:
Prof. Dr. Daniel Richter (DAAD-Visiting Professor): This lecture will offer a new perspective on the rise of mass culture in Argentina during the early 20th century by putting a spotlight on the stories of Jewish entrepreneurs who immigrated from Eastern Europe to the metropolis of Buenos Aires. The lecture will focus on the stories of two key figures: Max Glücksmann and Jaime Yankelevich, who played a crucial role in the evolution of the Argentinian film, music, and radio industries. Glücksmann’s career as Argentina's leading film distributor and Yankelevich’s activities in the globalization of radio and musical commerce both offer a unique example of how Jewish immigrants to Argentina were central to mass culture's expansion.

The Immigration from Argentina to Israel:
Dr. Adrián Krupnik (Tel Aviv University):This lecture will examine the experience of migration and “return migration” among Argentines who have migrated to Israel and then left, undergoing at times multiple migrations. Emigration from Israel to other parts of the world has not yet received significant scholarly attention, as the subject is a sensitive one in Israeli society. Yet, thousands of Jews from all over the world have lived between two homelands, as the Israeli-Argentine case demonstrates. This study sheds light on issues of immigrant identities, belonging, and expectations. The lecture is based on Dr Krupnik’s latest book Between Two Homelands: Argentine Migration to and from Israel (Alabama University Press, 2023).
