Yerushalmi Lecture: Antisemitism and the Theology of the Jewish Exile
Prof. Magda Teter (Fordham University)
05.11.2026 um 18:15 Uhr
Scholars have long distinguished between modern antisemitism and premodern anti-Judaism, suggesting that modern antisemitism is inflected by politics and racial ideology, while premodern anti-Judaism is shaped by theological concerns. In this talk, Magda Teter will consider how modern and contemporary antisemitism and antizionism are inflected both by contemporary political context and centuries-old, theologically grounded habits of thinking about Jews. The talk will focus on the contemporary reverberations of the theology of Jewish exile and suffering as punishment for sins.
Magda Teter is a Professor of History and the Shvidler Chair of Judaic Studies at Fordham University. She is the author of five books: Jews and Heretics in Catholic Poland (2005), Sinners on Trial: Jews and Sacrilege after the Reformation (2011), Blood Libel: On the Trail of An Antisemitic Myth (2020), Christian Supremacy: Reckoning with the Roots of Antisemitism and Racism (2023), Blood Libels, Hostile Archives: Reclaiming Interrupted Jewish Lives (2025), and dozens of articles in English, Hebrew, Italian, and Polish.
