Near midnight, a tired novelist stepped into the sleepy lobby of the Brown Hotel in the southern resort city of Eilat. He didn't think he'd have to be another Indiana Jones to get there on the way back home to Tel Aviv.

Yishai Sarid had finished two weeks of teaching at the University of Munich when Israel's air war with Iran broke out Friday. "I gave a seminar there about myths that shape Israel, and as part of those myths, what happened happened. I was supposed to get back to Israel on Saturday," he said.
