Blacks and Jews: Struggles in the American Promised Land

Prof. Dr. Pamela Nadell (Washington) und Prof. Dr. David Ruderman (Philadelphia)
Bonding over shared memories of escape from slavery and experiences of persecution and discrimination, American Jews and African Americans struggled together for civil rights. But in the late 1960s their tenuous coalition frayed. Pamela Nadell will survey the points where the two groups met and the ruptures that divided them. David Ruderman will reflect on the rabbinate of his father, Abraham Ruderman, and his experiences as a northerner striving for civil rights in a southern town.

Prof. Dr. Pamela Nadell ist Inhaberin des Patrick Clendenen-Lehrstuhls für Women’s and Gender History an der American University in Washington, D. C. und Direktorin des dortigen Jewish Studies-Programms. Darüber hinaus ist Professor Nadell Präsidentin der Association for Jewish Studies.
Unter ihren Publikationen sind Women Who Would Be Rabbis: A History of Women's Ordination, 1889-1985 (Boston, 1998), Conservative Judaism in America: A Biographical Dictionary (Westport 1988) sowie als Herausgeberin American Jewish Women's History: A Reader (New York, 2003), Women and American Judaism: Historical Perspectives (Hanover, 2001; mit Jonathan D. Sarna).
Prof. Dr. David B. Ruderman ist Joseph Meyerhoff Professor für Moderne Jüdische Geschichte an der University of Pennsylvania und war von 1994 bis 2014 Direktor des dortigen Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies.Unter seinen zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen sind das mit dem National Jewish Book Award ausgezeichnete Buch Early Modern Jewry: A New Cultural History (Princeton, 2010) sowie A Best-Selling Hebrew Book of the Modern Era: The Book of the Covenant of Pinḥas Hurwitz and its Remarkable Legacy (Seattle/London, 2014).
