Israel Studies or Enemy Studies? An Analysis of Israel Studies in Egyptian Higher Education

Dr. Menna Abukhadra (Kairo/Cambridge), Gastprofessorin für Arabisch-Israelische Koexistenz

28.04.2022 um 19:00 Uhr

For decades, Israel studies have been taught at Egyptian universities and they have recently been significantly expanded. Based on the entangled history of Israel and Egypt during the past century, the lecture outlines the development of Jewish, Hebrew and Israel studies in Egyptian universities since its early beginnings in 1909 and up until today in 2021. It examines the transformation of the angle of Israel studies in Egyptian higher education from religion and language studies, to political and "enemy" studies. The lecture also gives examples of how focusing on the entangled cultural history and the common cultural features between both countries led to a great and a slightly positive impact during the Arab spring in 2011.

Dr. Menna Abukhadra is a lecturer of Hebrew language and literature at Cairo University. She received her B.A. in Hebrew and Literature, M.A. and PhD in Modern Hebrew language and Poetry from the Department of Oriental Languages, Cairo University. Her primary research interests include studying the evolution of Israel studies in the Arab world, the image of Jews in Arabic speaking societies, the relation between Modern Hebrew literature and Jewish heritage, and the image of Jews in Egyptian film and television.

Der Vortrag findet in Kooperation mit dem Zentrum für Israel Studien (ZIS) statt.
